16. “Punishment After the Fact Means Nothing to Me”

Coming home to a chewed-up shoe? Tempting to scold your dog hours later. It does not work. Dogs do not connect a punishment to a behavior unless it happens within about 5 seconds.
That “guilty look” you see when you yell? Not guilt — fear. Your dog is responding to your angry voice, not remembering the shoe. If you want to change behavior, catch it in the moment. Yelling hours later just damages trust. Take a breath and clean up. The next one will change your daily walks.
